Officials have identified the 42-year-old man shot to death by U.S. Marshals in his Alton home Friday morning.
Matthew W. Zimmerman was pronounced dead at about 9:30 a.m. Friday at his home. An autopsy by the Madison County coroner showed he died from gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen.
The U.S. Marshal’s Service reported that the man had hidden in a closet with a knife when officers came into the home to arrest him.
Zimmerman was facing multiple charges in the United States District Court of Eastern Missouri for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.

Illinois State Police were investigating the shooting.
