Police shut down Illinois 177 near Bottom Prairie Road on Wednesday morning while they investigated a crash that killed a pedestrian.
Jean D. Winters, 40, of New Baden, died in the crash, according to a news release from Illinois State Police. Winters was a pedestrian walking west in the eastbound lane on Illinois 177 near Prairie Bottom Road at 5 a.m. Wednesday when the driver of a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt struck her.
The driver of the Cobalt, 36-year-old Scott Moffatt, of Okawville, was not injured. Moffatt attempted to pass a pickup on Illinois 177 and struck Winters, who he did not see until the impact, according to a news release from the Washington County Coroner’s Office. Winters suffered massive traumatic injuries and was killed instantly.
Winters was wearing a black sweatshirt, black pants and black shoes when she was hit, according to a news release from the Washington County Coroner’s Office. She was pronounced dead at 5:52 a.m. Wednesday.
No charges had been filed as of Wednesday in connection with the crash. Alcohol on the part of Winters was thought to have played a role in the crash. No autopsy is planned, but toxicology samples were obtained for routine testing.
Traffic was being diverted away from the crash, according to an email from Illinois State Police Trooper Joshua Haile. He noted the accident was just west of Okawville.
