Father in custody after baby girl who ‘showed signs of abuse’ is hospitalized

A 22-year-old Belleville man was charged with child abuse Friday, two days after his infant daughter was hospitalized.

Police responded to a call at about 9 p.m. Wednesday at a home in the 200 block of Freedom Drive for an allegation of child abuse.

They found a 4-month-old girl and her father, Destin Jackson, at the home. The baby was conscious and breathing but “showed signs of abuse” when assessed by emergency medical staff, Belleville Police Master Sgt. Todd Keilbach said in a news release.

She was taken to a local hospital and then later transferred to a St. Louis hospital, where she was in stable condition Thursday afternoon, police said.

The father was taken into police custody Wednesday night and was charged with aggravated battery to a child on Friday. His bail was set at $100,000.

The mother was not home at the time, and police did not know of any other children living at the residence.

The mother has been cooperative in the investigation, Keilbach said.
