U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, an East St. Louis native, spoke briefly during the weekend about the comments made about the town where he was raised.
The comments were in response to former Illinois Lottery Control Board Chairman Blair Garber’s comments on Twitter, where he called the city the “shithole of the universe.”
Garber resigned from the lottery board on Wednesday, following an outcry about his comment.
“That was a disgusting statement by a member of the (Bruce) Rauner administration and the governor was right to fire him,” Durbin, a Democrat said during the weekend while campaigning in Belleville with gubernatorial candidate J.B. Pritzker.

“It was disgusting because it is a good city, a lot of good families and people, struggling against the odds. I am proud to say, and I do it publicly all the time, (I was) born and raised in East St. Louis. I think they have a good leader in their new mayor, I work with her closely. We’re doing everything we can to get that city back on its feet.”
