New Memphis man drowned in car
Clinton County officials have identified the man found in a submerged car on Tuesday morning.
Gustavo Sotelo-Andrade, 28, of New Memphis, died of accidental drowning, said Phillip Moss, Clinton County coroner.
New Memphis is south of New Baden and east of Mascoutah. Sotelo-Andrade was found in his vehicle near Billhartz and Airport roads near Damiensville early Tuesday morning; Clin-Clair Fire Chief Brian Hubert earlier said a nearby resident saw the vehicle go into the flooded area.
The vehicle was found in water about 8 feet deep, roughly 50-75 yards from where it went in.
According to Belleville Fire Chief Tom Pour, who sent four firefighters and a boat to the scene as part of the St. Clair County Special Emergency Services team’s rescue effort, a sign posted beside the road warned drivers not to attempt to navigate the flooded road.
