Golf cart driver, 81, flown to hospital after colliding with truck in Southern Illinois

An 81-year-old Olney man was flown to the hospital Tuesday afternoon after the golf cart he was driving was struck by a full-size pickup truck.

William D. Spitz was driving the golf cart south on Illinois 130 near Olney at about 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to Illinois State Police. He crossed over the highway into the path of a northbound 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Brady K. King, 34, of Henderson, Kentucky.

King swerved in attempt to avoid Spitz but struck the golf cart with the front end of his truck. The golf cart was then propelled around and struck the passenger side of the pickup truck, Illinois State Police said.

Spitz was ejected from the golf cart and taken by helicopter to a hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

Charges in the crash are pending an investigation, Illinois State Police said.
