Police search for Collinsville man suspected of stealing a van at knifepoint

Police were searching Friday for a 21-year-old Collinsville man suspected of stealing a minivan at knifepoint in East St. Louis, according to charges filed in St. Clair County.

A woman and a man were in the van on Interstate 55 on July 21 when Jeremy A. Mitchell cut them with a knife then stole the vehicle, according to information from Illinois State Police in the charges. It was not immediately clear if the car was stopped or if Mitchell was in the car with the two.

Mitchell, of the 700 block of Saint Clair Avenue in Collinsville, is accused of cutting the woman on the arm and the back, and cutting the man on the arm.

Mitchell also faced misdemeanor criminal trespassing and disorderly conduct charges in St. Clair County in June this year, according to Circuit Clerk records. A court date is pending in those cases.

A St. Clair County judge issued a warrant for Mitchell’s arrest Wednesday and set bail at $250,000.
