A stock car racer died Saturday night in Flora when another vehicle landed on top of his during a race at Clay County Speedway.
Don Lamacchia, 53, was trying to avoid another stock car that had flipped in the air in front of his by driving under it, but the vehicle fell on him anyway, according to witness accounts.
“He loved the big time,” Lamacchia’s friend, Rich Bowers, told Fox 2 on Monday. “That car he died in he built from the ground up. Every car he had, he built from the ground up.”
The racetrack had recently reopened. A female driver was killed there six years ago, the report said.
It is unclear when the track will reopen.
