Driver distracted by stereo avoids crash he caused, police say

A 22-year-old driver was looking down at a stereo on Friday afternoon when police say he caused an accident at the DuBois Road intersection of U.S. 51 in Du Bois.

Christian J. Vacker of Kincaid was in a Ford Escape around 2:39 p.m. as his vehicle approached a Chrysler stopped at the intersection, Illinois State Police said.

He managed to swerve off the road and avoid striking the stopped vehicle, which was driven by 41-year-old Chrystal T. Manning of DuQuoin. However, Manning was then struck by a Chevrolet Sonic driven by Hallie D. Scott, 20 of Irvington who was behind Kincaid’s vehicle.

No one was injured.

“The driver of the Ford became distracted with the vehicle’s stereo system and was following the Chrysler too closely as evidence by his inability to safely stop behind the Chrysler. ... The driver of the Chevrolet was then left with little to no time or distance to avoid striking the rear end of the Chrysler,” Illinois State Police officials wrote in a statement.

Vacker was ticketed for following to closely.
