Blown tire causes semi to collide with oncoming semis; highway shut down for 6 hours

A three-truck crash in Marion County closed all lanes of southbound Interstate 57 near Salem for almost six hours on Thursday afternoon.

Just after noon, a blown front steer tire caused a tractor trailer that was traveling northbound to lose control and cross the median, hitting two southbound trucks, according to Illinois State Police.

The driver of the semi, Yazid Abdulla-Ali Al Nobi, 28 of Dearborn, Michigan, and his passenger, Mohammed Hussein Mohsen of Detroit, 24, were injured in the crash.

Both were taken to Salem Township Hospital, police said.

The crash caused the trailers of both southbound trucks to come off their respective tractors and continue southbound until they rested on the right side of I-57, according to police.

Al Nobi was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.
