Engineers are taking a hard look at the future of Interstate 270 from Riverview Drive in Missouri through the Illinois 111 interchange and they want the public’s input.
“There’s things we may not know about, local residents may have particular safety concerns or issues. ... It’s not part of our daily commute,” said Kirk Brown, program development engineer at the Illinois Department of Transportation.
IDOT is hosting an open house public meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Southwestern Illinois College Granite City campus at 4950 Maryville Road.
Brown said the study stage, where IDOT is now on any potential project, could last up to two or three years because the department considers future traffic needs as well as land issues and environmental concerns.
He said the area is a “key freight corridor in our area” and the department anticipates growth.
“We’re looking out into the future,” he said, adding that there is no construction budget for the area’s six-year plan yet.
