Badly decomposed body found behind Belleville gas station

Authorities are still working to identify a badly decomposed body found Tuesday night behind a gas station in Belleville. Police say a tow yard worker was feeding stray cats in an area behind the Conoco building, at 1424 Centreville Ave., and detected an odor. He called police around 6 p.m. and the body was discovered.

A badly decomposed body was found Tuesday night behind a gas station in Belleville.

A passerby walking behind the Conoco building at 1424 Centreville Ave. noticed the body and called police around 6 p.m., according to St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department officials. When county deputies arrived, they discovered the body of a man in the weeds.

The identity of the man wasn’t known Tuesday night. In a news release, the sheriff’s department said it was possible the body had been there for seven or eight days.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning.
