Two people flown to the hospital after U.S. 51 crash involving stolen car

Two people were flown to a hospital following a head-on crash in Jackson County on Wednesday that involved a stolen vehicle.

Around 9 p.m., Karla Henry, 54, from near Elkville, Illinois, was driving northbound on U.S. 51 near Cobin Lane when a southbound 2002 Ford sedan entered the lane she was in and struck her 2007 Chevrolet sedan head on, a Southern Illinoisan report said.

A 16-year-old whose name has not been released was driving the Ford, which had been reported stolen in the Pinckneyville area, the report said. The young man did not have a valid driver’s license.

He and Henry both suffered serious injuries, the report said. Henry’s passenger, Richard Owens, 45, of Carbondale, and two juvenile passengers in the Ford were treated and released on site.

According to the report, U.S. 51 was shut down for about an hour due to the crash.
