A 26-year-old East St. Louis man was shot and kill shortly after 7 p.m. Monday outside an East St. Louis barber shop at 22nd Street and State Street.

Bakari J. Irons was pronounced dead at Touchette Regional Hospital at 7:41 p.m., according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye. Irons’ friend drove him to the Centreville hospital.

Illinois state Police Master Sgt. Mike Lewis said his agency is handling the homicide investigation

An autopsy of Irons was scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, Dye said. He added that it appears Irons died of a bullet wound to the chest.

Lewis said Irons was a passenger in a friend’s car when he arrived in the area where he was shot. He and the friend had been patrons at the tattoo and barber shop.

“As the victim exited the business, he was hit with a barrage of gunfire,” Lewis said.

Police have not identified suspects or a motive.

Lewis said police are canvassing the area looking for people who may have seen or heard something that will lead police to the shooter.
