Traffic on northbound Interstate 57 in Southern Illinois slowed Wednesday night as multiple agencies tended to a car versus tractor-trailer crash.

Around 5 p.m., the driver of a tractor-trailer was stopped in traffic to enter a weigh station on I-57 near Marion, a news release from Illinois State Police District 13 stated. The driver of a Chevrolet Silverado behind the truck failed to make a stop and rear-ended the semi.

The 26-year-old driver of the Chevrolet Silverado, David Keith, of Belton, Kentucky, was flown to Deaconess Hospital in Indiana with incapacitating injuries, the release stated. The driver of the Freightliner, 41-year-old Louis Fontanez of Lexington, Nebraska, did not suffer severe injuries. Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts.

Lake of Egypt and Marion fire departments responded to the accident. According to the release, charges are pending an investigation by Illinois State Police.
