A car fire that spread into the garage at Main Street Automotive in Belleville briefly closed the road at about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday.

“The initial call was somebody from here that ran to Station 2, and told us there was a fire,” Chief Tom Pour of the Belleville Fire Department said.

As firetrucks were going to the shop at 2004 W. Main Street, Pour said, the department got multiple calls about explosions.

“The garage owner thinks the fuel line might have leaked,” Pour said. That would account for the noises people reported hearing, the chief added.

The car had been parked up against the glass garage doors, and the fire went from the car and into the building.

Crews were on scene for about half an hour when Pour said the firefighters were cleaning up. The street was quickly reopened to traffic.
