Fatal accident closes most lanes on I-255 near Columbia
A fatal crash Thursday morning closed all but one northbound and southbound lane on Interstate 255 near Columbia.
The Illinois State Police say a Toyota changed lanes and hit the front of a Hyundai at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday. The Toyota overturned, and the driver was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Clair County Coroner.
Only the driver was in the Toyota. A driver and passenger in the Hyundai were checked by medics; neither was taken to a hospital.
The police urged motorists to detour by using Old State Route 3. The highway was reopened Thursday afternoon.
The Illinois State Police are investigating. The identity of the Toyota’s driver has not yet been released.
