Truck collides with train in Randolph County, causes fuel spill

St. Clair County HAZMAT crews assisted Randolph County first responders after a semi struck a train on a crossing on Illinois 4 southeast of Percy Wednesday afternoon, causing a diesel fuel spill.

According to St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency administrator Herb Simmons, the HAZMAT team was dispatched at 12:40 p.m. to help mop up the diesel fuel spilled from a locomotive’s fuel tank after the collision tore a hole in the tank.

Those crews remained on the scene as of 5 p.m.

Simmons said the driver of the truck “was shaken up,” but the driver’s condition and the condition of train crew members were not immediately available. Simmons added that no evacuations were necessary because the collision occurred in a rural area.

Randolph County Sheriff Shannon Wolf couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.
