Some Illinois lanes to Poplar Street Bridge will be closed for a month, IDOT says
Commuters who take westbound Interstate 55/64 to work every morning will have to endure “extensive delays” as some lanes will close for at least a month, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The agency announced that crews will begin installing traffic control devices on the inside lane of the highway near the Poplar Street Bridge on Monday, Oct. 14. That lane will remain closed until Sunday, Oct. 27. During that time, the two right lanes of I-55/64 and the exits to southbound Tudor/Piggott and Illinois 3 will remain open.
Once the traffic control devices are installed, crews will reopen the left lane completely and close the two right lanes of the highway for approximately one month, IDOT said. Marked detour routes will be in place for traffic accessing southbound Tudor/Piggot and Illinois 3.
More information on the exact time frame of the closures will be announced later, according to IDOT.
“The closures are necessary to perform critical repairs to the badly deteriorated joints and wearing surfaces of the bridges in this area,” a news release from IDOT stated.
Drivers are urged to plan accordingly and use alternate routes, including the I-70 Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge. IDOT also said people should seek alternate forms of transportation, like carpooling and public transportation, and to slow down and obey all construction signage if they do drive.
