Multi-vehicle crash with an overturned semi shuts down portion of I-55/70

Two people were injured, one seriously, when a two tractor trailers collided at the Interstate 70 westbound ramp to Interstate 55 near Troy Monday morning just before rush hour.

Illinois State Police Trooper Joshua Korando said ice was a factor in the crash.

The driver of one of the semis was extricated from the overturned vehicle and has serious injuries, Korando said. The driver of the second tractor-trailer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, he said. A third person who was driving a SUV was not hurt.

The jack-knifed trailer and debris blocked the southbound ramp from I-70 to I-55.

“At least one vehicle slid off the ice covered roadway on the ramp and struck the guardrail,” Korando said. “The Interstate-70 westbound ramp to Interstate-255 will be shut down for an extended period,” Korando said.
