Crews rescue woman stuck on bluff near Alton for 9 hours on Christmas morning

First responders rescued a woman stuck on a bluff in Piasa Park in Madison County on Christmas morning.

The woman had attempted to climb the cliff the evening before, Alton Fire Chief Jesse Jemison told The Telegraph.

The woman, whose name has not been released, got stuck around 4 p.m. Tuesday, FOX 2 reported.

Jemison said she slipped and ended up on a ledge, then “couldn’t figure out how to get down.”

After 1 a.m. on Wednesday, someone heard the woman’s cries for help and called 911 in Madison County, the Telegraph report said. She was approximately 30 feet off the ground.

Rescue crews used ladders to climb up to the woman, which goes through thick, wooded brush, according to the report. She was not seriously injured.

Authorities did not disclose why the woman was climbing the bluff.
