Fire damages home in Chenot Place neighborhood, east of Belleville

Three fire departments responded to a fire that damaged a home on Magnolia Drive in the Chenot Place neighborhood, east of Belleville, on Tuesday afternoon.

The residents weren’t inside the one-story, single-family brick ranch, and no one was injured, according to Chief Jared Runyan of East Side Volunteer Fire Department.

“We’ll call it ‘uninhabitable,’” he said. “It wasn’t completely destroyed.”

East Side was dispatched to the scene at 1:40 p.m. Tuesday. Belleville and Swansea fire departments provided assistance.

“The fire was under control quickly,” Runyan said. “But there was extensive overhaul because the fire was in the attic. Insulation burns slow and kind of smolders. It takes a while to make sure it’s out.”

The fire’s cause didn’t appear suspicious and isn’t under investigation, he said.
