St. Louis to close I-64 ramps for new soccer stadium. What will it mean for commuters?

The City of St. Louis has announced it will permanently close five ramps to and from Interstate 64 in downtown St. Louis for construction of a new Major League Soccer stadium.

The city and MLS4THE LOU — the soccer team’s organization — announced that the following ramps will close at 10 a.m. on Feb. 3:

  • I-64 westbound: on ramp from Pine St. and Market St., exit 39 at Market St.
  • I-64 eastbound: on ramp from South Ewing Ave., on ramp from Pine St. and Market St., exit 38B at North 20th St. and Chestnut St.

“The early closure of these ramps is an important step towards the construction of St. Louis’ new Major League Soccer stadium,” the release stated.

The city is sharing recommended detour routes to minimize inconveniences in traffic and commuting, which can be found at www.stlouis-mo.gov/project-connect/mls/.

The land between 20th and 22nd streets in St. Louis, where the ramps are now, has been selected as “the ideal footprint” for the stadium district, which will include the stadium, team headquarters and practice fields.

“This area will provide better access for fans and allow for the development of a year-round urban hub surrounding the stadium,” the city said in the release.

It also said it plans on developing the Downtown West area into “an urban activity hub” that will be open year-round and accessible via pedestrian pathways, bicycles and public transit.
