MetroLink operating as normal following crash in East St. Louis

The MetroLink trains were operating on a normal schedule Sunday following a crash between a train and a pickup truck Saturday at the border of Washington Park and East St. Louis.

The collision occurred around 1:20 p.m. at the grade crossing on Kingshighway at the Washington Park and East St. Louis border near the Washington Park MetroLink station.

Four passengers and the train operator all requested medical assistance after the crash, according to a MetroLink spokesman. Their medical conditions were not immediately available.

The East St. Louis Police Department is investigating the crash, Illinois State Police said Saturday. A representative from East St. Louis police could not be immediately reached for comment on Sunday.

The collision forced the MetroLink tracks to be closed between the Emerson Park and Fairview Heights stations, requiring passengers to take a bus to get to the Emerson Park, JJK Center, Washington Park and Fairview Heights stations.

East St. Louis police officers, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department deputies and EMS crews responded to the scene. State troopers also were on the scene but they are investigating a minor crash that occurred when a vehicle backed into a MetroLink patrol car, according to an Illinois State Police spokesman.
