Illinois DOT to close two lanes of Interstate 55/70 in East St. Louis

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced it will close two lanes of Interstate 55/70 in East St. Louis during the day Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the agency announced it would close the left and center lanes of eastbound I-55/70 at the bridge near mile marker 3.8 east of Exchange Avenue. The closures will be from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

In a news release, IDOT said the lane restrictions were needed to repair the driving surface of the bridge.

The release stated that drivers can expect significant delays and should allow extra time for trips through the area. IDOT also suggested avoiding the area when feasible and to consider alternate routes.

“Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment,” the release stated.

The road work comes at a time where IDOT also has all lanes of Interstate 255 closed between I-70 and I-64 as part of a 10-month plan. Later this year, the highway will close between I-64 and Illinois 15.
