Man killed in Fairview Heights car crash

A 39-year old Cahokia man died in a car crash on Lincoln Trail in Fairview Heights late Saturday night.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the man as Delano B. Smith of Cahokia.

“He was pronounced at 11:55 p.m.,” Dye said.

Fairview Heights Police say they received a call at 10:45 p.m. to respond to a two-vehicle crash on Lincoln Trail at Commerce Lane.

“When officers arrived, just after the crash, they located a severely damaged black Mercedes passenger car resting on its side against a utility pole,” Tim Mueller said through a statement.

Officers attempted first aid but could not save Smith, Mueller said.

Preliminary details showed Smith’s car was headed east on Lincoln Trail at a high rate of speed. A Chevrolet Silverado was stopped at a red light in the same lane that Smith was traveling as he approached the intersection at Commerce Lane.

Smith’s car struck the truck and the impact caused Smith’s vehicle to continue east, striking a utility pole, Mueller said.

The metro-east crash assistance team responded to investigate the fatal crash.

Smith was the only occupant in his vehicle. Neither the driver nor passenger in the Silverado were injured.

It is not known whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Mueller said the investigation is continuing.
