St. Louis police officers shot during night of violent protests in Missouri, Illinois
Four St. Louis police officers were shot during another night of violent protests in the city, according to multiple media reports.
Both the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and KMOV Channel 4 reported that the shooting happened near St. Louis police headquarters. Protesters and police clashed repeatedly through the night in the area, KMOV reported.
The four officers were conscious and breathing and their wounds from the St. Louis shooting are not believed to be life threatening, the Post-Dispatch reported.
In addition to the shootings, multiple stores have been looted, including Foot Locker at 3651 Page Boulevard.
Earlier in the evening, the 7-Eleven at 17th and Pine was captured being looted by KSDK Channel 5. Also according to KSDK, a rioter threw a firework into the store. It exploded, causing the 7-Eleven to catch fire. KMOX reported that protesters impeded firefighters as they attempted to reach the burning St. Louis store.
Monday’s protests in St. Louis were peaceful during the daytime, St. Louis Public Radio reported.
Thousands of people gathered downtown starting at 3:30 p.m. to protest the killing of George Floyd in police custody in Minneapolis last week. They marched from the jail in front of City Hall to the Arch grounds, participating in interactive activities that organizers included in the demonstration.
In O’Fallon, Missouri, more than a thousand people marched peacefully on Monday night.
Violent protests in Illinois
The Associated Press reported that two people were killed Monday night during unrest in Cicero
Cicero spokesman Ray Hanania said police arrested 60 people during the protest in the town of about 84,000 west of Chicago. People broke into businesses during the unrest.
Protests in Bloomington also turned violent Monday night. Looters broke into a Kohl’s and police used at least three rounds of tear gas.
Crowds in Naperville were seen breaking windows, including at a Barnes and Noble, a jewelry store and Einstein Bagels.
Tear gas in Kansas City
Shortly after mayor Quinton Lucas joined a march and addressed a crowd of people protesting the death of George Floyd, Kansas City police deployed tear gas against demonstrators, according to the Kansas City Star.
