Jerseyville man killed in fire near Edwardsville that got ‘out of control’

A Jerseyville man has been identified as the victim of a fatal fire Monday morning in unincorporated Edwardsville.

John L. Munsterman, 74, was killed in the fire at his son’s home in the 3400 block of Glennoak Drive, Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn said in a news release on Tuesday.

Around 10:30 a.m., Munsterman “was engaged in a controlled burn of old fencing debris in the rear of the residence that got out of control and spread to the residence,” Nonn said in the release.

Munsterman was not able to escape the fire, Nonn said. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Madison County Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Smith at 11:35 a.m.

Munsterman’s death continues to be investigated by the coroner’s office, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department, the Edwardsville Fire Department and the Illinois Office of State Fire Marshal, Nonn said.

Pending funeral arrangements for Munsterman are being handled by Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
