Drowning is preliminary cause of death for Scott Air Force Base officer, coroner says

The St. Clair County coroner has reported that drowning is the preliminary cause of death for an active duty Air Force officer who died after he was found unconscious in a pool on the base on Friday.

Capt. Nicholas J. Egich, 30, of Scott Air Force Base was identified as the victim, according to St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Dye said an autopsy was conducted but a final ruling on the cause of death is pending toxicology test results.

Egich was pronounced dead in the Memorial Hospital East emergency room in Shiloh at 4:24 p.m. Friday, Dye said.

The 375th Air Mobility Wing Public Affairs office had announced the incident but did not immediately release the officer’s name pending notification to his family.
