Granite City police investigating death of pedestrian hit by car
Police are investigating after a vehicle fatally struck a pedestrian on Illinois 3 near St. Thomas Road early Monday.
Officers were called to the scene at 4:48 a.m. for a report of a person hit by a car, Granite City Capt. Nick Novacich said Wednesday. The victim was identified as Ryan A. Stiles, 33, of Granite City, Madison County Chief Deputy Coroner Roger Smith said.
Stiles was pronounced dead on scene at 5:38 a.m. by Coroner’s Investigator Christopher Hartman. According to Smith, Stiles sustained blunt head, chest and abdominal trauma. Routine toxicology testing for alcohol and drugs, which is required by Illinois state law, was pending as of Wednesday evening.
It is unknown why Stiles was in the roadway, Novacich said.
As the crash is still under investigation, police did not release further details on the driver or any pending charges.
The Traffic Reconstruction Unit has been called in to help investigate the incident.
Funeral arrangements for Stiles are under the direction of Metro East Mortuary in Belleville.
