Woman, two boys airlifted from Illinois 4 crash near Marissa, police say
A 27-year-old Marissa woman and two young boys in her car were seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash on Illinois 4 north of Marissa Wednesday, Illinois State Police said.
The woman and the boys, ages 4 and 3, were airlifted from the scene at the intersection of Illinois 4 and New Athens Darmstadt Road. Their names were not released.
Thomas L. Cross, 73, of Sparta, was driving a minivan that collided with the woman’s car, police said. He suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken by an ambulance to a hospital.
State troopers gave this preliminary account of what happened: The Marissa woman was going east on New Athens Darmstadt Road at 12:53 p.m. when she failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Illinois 4. She crossed into the path of Cross’ vehicle, which was going south on Illinois 4 and had the right of way.
Cross’ van hit the driver’s side of the woman’s Ford Focus and both vehicles overturned several times.
Illinois 4 was closed as troopers investigated the crash.
This crash is being investigated by the Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit. No other information will be released as of Wednesday afternoon, police said.
