Lebanon police ID pedestrian fatally struck by car

A man was fatally struck by a car while he was walking on U.S. 50 near the post office on Thursday afternoon, Lebanon police said.

Robert McCabe, 66, was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon at 4:40 p.m. said St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

Lebanon Police Chief Dave Roth said it was a “tragic accident” that led to McCabe’s death and that charges are not expected to be filed against the motorist.

Because of the serious nature of the accident, Lebanon police called the Illinois State Police accident reconstruction team to investigate the accident reported about 1:15 p.m.

Motorists on U.S. 50, which is also known as East St. Louis Street, were detoured just east of the intersection with Illinois 4 until late afternoon. The scene had since been cleared and the highway reopened.
