A Freeburg woman and a Smithton man were pronounced dead at the scene of a three-car crash that also injured two others on Illinois 159 south of Belleville Wednesday morning.

According to St. Clair County Deputy Coroner Dennis Nichols, Cindy Easter, 58, of Freeburg and Joseph Haverman, 88, of Smithton were pronounced dead at the scene.

Illinois State Police responded to the scene at about 9:24 a.m. on Illinois 159 just north of the intersection at Mulligan Road. According to ISP’s preliminary report, Easter was traveling northbound on Illinois 159 and approaching a southbound Chevrolet. Haverman was driving behind the Chevrolet when Easter lost control for unknown reasons and drove into the center line. Easter’s car continued into the southbound lane and struck the driver side of the passing Chevrolet before crashing head on into Haverman.

An 87-year-old woman who was a passenger in Haverman’s vehicle was airlifted to a St. Louis-area hospital with life-threatening injuries.

A 29-year-old Belleville man who was riding with Easter was transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville with minor injuries.

The driver of the Chevrolet, a 70-year-old woman from Belleville, was not injured.

The accident remains under investigation.
