Six ways St. Louis region residents can virtually celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. spent his life striving for equality and civil rights for all. His efforts contributed to giving the vote to Black citizens, ending segregation and providing other basic civil rights.

The official federal holiday - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - is Monday.

You can celebrate King’s life and accomplishments this year by attending a virtual event. Here’s a sampling:

MLK Celebration: Commemorating King in St. Louis — 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 17. Online via Zoom. On Nov. 27, 1960, Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the United Hebrew Temple on Skinker Blvd.; today it’s the Missouri Historical Society’s Library & Research Center. Listen to a first-hand account from a St. Louisan who was in the audience that day. The National Civil Rights Museum will showcase King’s work, the history of how the national holiday came to be, and how the museum has celebrated the holiday in past years.
