The salaries and wages of Granite City employees for 2020 have been added to the Belleville News-Democrat’s Public Pay Database.

The highest earner in 2020, the latest figures available, was now retired Police Chief Kenneth Rozell, who was paid $144,803, according to records provided to the BND through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Rozell retired in March after working at the department since 1990.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Supervisor Jeffrey Hamilton was the second-highest earner, bringing in $138,744, the records show.

Fire Department Captain Scott Strack was third at $133,021.

The fourth-highest earner was Fire Department Captain Will Wilson, who was paid $128,191. The fifth-highest earner was Jason Wilson, another captain with the fire department who earned $118,004.

Former Mayor Ed Hagnauer was paid $73,934 in 2020. Hagnauer did not run for reelection in the April election.

The BND’s Public Pay Database goes back to 2011 with information obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests. The salary information does not always include insurance or benefits. Some records include detailed information on overtime and other pay, while for some districts that information was not readily available.

The database includes worker compensation in most local governments, including cities, counties, townships, school districts and local colleges and universities. More pay records will be added as the BND receives salary data through open records requests.
