Madison County restaurant closes, building declared “dangerous and unsafe”
A Denny’s restaurant at 27 Junction Drive in Glen Carbon has been closed and the building declared ``dangerous and unsafe,” according to city officials.
“We were contacted to respond to Denny’s for a report of a roof collapse due to heavy rain,” stated Glen Carbon Fire Chief Jason Whitaker in an email. “We found damage to the interior ceiling tiles from an apparent roof leak. There was no exterior damage noted to roof itself.
“This appeared to be a ongoing issue and not exclusive to [Monday] night’s rainfall. The Village of Glen Carbon Building and Zoning department has taken over the investigation/mitigation of the incident. Denny’s was closed as of Monday and remains closed today.”
On Monday, Aug. 30, an official notice from Dan Thomas, Building & Zoning Inspector for the Village of Glen Carbon, was posted condemning the building as “dangerous and unsafe.”
An additional notice posted by Thomas read, “This structure is declared unsafe for human occupancy or use. It is unlawful for any person to use or occupy this building.”
It is not yet known if the closure is temporary or permanent.
Messages left with Glen Carbon’s Building & Zoning Department were not immediately returned.
Updates will be reported as additional information becomes available.
