Overnight closures of the Martin Luther King Bridge are now scheduled to continue into next week, the Illinois Department of Transportation said.
The eastbound lane closures will allow workers to install scaffolding in advance of upcoming work including replacement of the steel grid deck.
After 8 p.m. Thursday, eastbound lanes on the bridge are scheduled to be closed. One eastbound lane will re-open by 6 a.m. Friday and will remain open until 8 p.m. Monday, IDOT said.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, one eastbound lane of traffic will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. before closing overnight.

One eastbound lane again will reopen at 6 a.m. Thursday, July 2, and will remain open through Friday, IDOT said.
IDOT has tentatively scheduled a full closure of the MLK Bridge on July 6 for four-and-a-half months. The full closure, however, will not go into effect until two westbound lanes are reopened on the Poplar Street Bridge, IDOT said.
A marked detour will be in place to guide motorists around the work zone.
