How will Schnucks and Target pharmacies be affected by CVS plan to close 900 stores?
The recent announcement by CVS Health Corp. that it will close about 900 stores in the United States over the next three years was disappointing news for many customers.
The company has 27 pharmacies in the metro-east, 16 of which are located inside Schnucks and Target stores.
“We do not expect Target and Schnucks locations to be impacted by the reduction,” Charlie Rice-Minoso, manager of CVS Health Midwest media relations, said Monday.
“The focus of this footprint optimization is to align our core stores, our standalone CVS locations, with our new strategy and market dynamics.”
The CVS strategy includes continued operation of traditional pharmacies with retail stores but also expansion into more health and wellness clinics, primary care medical facilities and telehealth services, according to a news release posted on the company’s website Thursday.
CVS hasn’t revealed which standalone stores are under consideration for closing.
“The company has been evaluating changes in population, consumer buying patterns and future health needs to ensure it has the right kinds of stores in the right locations for consumers and for the business,” the release stated.
“As part of this initiative, CVS Health will reduce store density in certain locations and close approximately 300 stores a year for the next three years. The company is committed to offering impacted colleagues roles in other locations or different opportunities as part of its overall workforce strategy.”
CVS is the Rhode Island-based parent company of Aetna, one of the country’s largest health-insurance providers.
Schnucks announced in March 2020 that CVS would take over nearly 100 of the supermarket chain’s in-store pharmacies in the St. Louis region, including the metro-east.
Schnucks officials pointed out that CVS was the first major retail pharmacy chain to remove tobacco products from its store shelves and that Schnucks had become tobacco-free on Jan. 1, 2020.
“As Schnucks continues to expand our emphasis on health and wellness, this collaboration with CVS is an opportunity for us to align with a company that has a similar focus,” Schnucks CEO Todd Schnuck stated when the two companies formed their partnership.
