A 35-year-old Alton man was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 64/55 near Barack Obama Avenue in East St. Louis.

Ryan B. Heinlein was pronounced dead at the scene, said St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr.

A 10-year-old juvenile who was in the Ford Edge SUV with Heinlein was injured and was taken to an area hospital, Illinois State Police said in a press release. An immediate report on his condition was not available.

Michael D. Merzwinski, 56, of Ypsilanti , Michigan, who was the driver of a Chevrolet Express van, was injured and was also taken to an area hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

A preliminary investigation shows the SUV was traveling west in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 64/55 at 5:36 p.m. and struck the eastbound van head on, the release states. Merzwinski had to be extracted from the van, state police said.

State police continue to investigate.
