Three people injured when SUVs collide head-on in rural Southern Illinois

Three people were injured in a head-on collision Monday on U.S. 50 in rural Marion County, according to the Illinois State Police.

Shannon Lewis, 42, of Flora, the driver of a Mitsubishi Outlander, and Tammy Wallace, 55, of Kinmundy, a passenger in a GMC Sierra, were airlifted to hospitals for treatment of serious injuries, the state police said in a news release. Another passenger in the Sierra, a 2-year-old boy whose identity was not released, also was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

State police said the accident happened about 6 p.m. on U.S. 50, just east of Bannister Road. The Outlander was traveling east when it crossed the center line and struck the Sierra head-on, according to the release.

The Sierra driver refused medical treatment, the release said.
