Highland High School student killed in Clinton County car crash

Highland High School freshman Jarron Haberer, 14, died in a car accident over the weekend, according to an email sent out to families from Principal Chris Becker.

“Coping with the loss of a student is never easy and our school community is going through a grieving process at this time,” Becker wrote in the email.

The crash occurred in Clinton County, County Coroner Phillip Moss confirmed Monday.

On Saturday night around 10:29 p.m., the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a crash on Sportsmen Road just north of Rutz Road, according to a press release.

Haberer was ejected from the car during a “rollover type crash.” He was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese where he died, the release stated.

The driver, a 19-year old-woman from rural Trenton, was treated for minor injuries. The crash investigation and reconstruction are in progress and pending.

Staff and students in Highland were asked to wear red on Monday in Haberer’s memory.

Haberer wrestled in the Highland Bullogs Jr. Wrestling Club for eight years and also loved scary movies, skateboarding and video games, according to his obituary.

Highland school counselors, psychologists and social workers will be available at the high school on Monday for staff and students who need support. The Highland Area Ministerial Alliance is also volunteering counseling services.

Visitation is Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Meredith Funeral Home in Highland. The funeral service starts at 1 p.m. on Friday.
