A Belleville woman was killed in a single-car crash Sunday evening in the west end of the city.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. identified the woman as Shakiya Oliver, 23, of North 45th Street. Oliver was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:30 p.m., Dye said.

Police Capt. Mark Heffernan said officers were alerted to a crash with a person trapped about 5:30 p.m. Officers found Oliver inside her 2007 Chrysler Sebring with injuries.

“Witnesses in the area said the car was traveling east bound at a high rate of speed when it struck,” Heffernan said.

It appears Oliver veered from her lane near 70th and Main Street and over corrected, causing her to lose control of the car and strike the large sign in front of the ACE hardware store, Heffernan said.

The Belleville Fire Department and Emergency Medical Services also responded.
