New 40-bed rehabilitation center with private rooms, specialty care opens in Shiloh
A new 40-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital is now open in Shiloh.
BJC Healthcare and Encompass Health announced the opening in a press release this week.
The Rehabilitation Institute of Southern Illinois features private rooms for patients, a large therapy gym with the latest tech in rehab, an activities of daily living suite, therapy courtyard, cafeteria and dayroom, according to the release.
The new hospital benefits patients recovering from injuries and illnesses including brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputations, complex orthopedic conditions, strokes and other neurological disorders.
Physical, occupational and speech therapies, as well as 24-hour nursing care, are also provided.

Mark Tarr, president and chief executive officer of Encompass Health, stated in the release: “We are excited to open this new hospital in Shiloh as a joint venture between Encompass Health, a national leader in post-acute healthcare services, and Protestant Memorial Medical Center, Inc., an affiliate of BJC HealthCare, one of the largest non-profit healthcare organizations in the country.

The facility was first proposed in 2019 and had, at that time, struggled to obtain the state’s approval.
The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board denied approval in September 2019 due to the size of the project and questions of whether the facility was necessary.
That decision was appealed by BJC Healthcare and Encompass Health Corporation.
In November 2019, a document containing additional information was submitted, demonstrating the need for the facility and the specialized care it would offer.
The project was eventually approved by the Health Facilities and Services Review Board in September 2020.
