Hazmat crews responding to oil leak in Madison County

A crude oil leak closed multiple streets in Edwardsville Friday.

According to officials, the leak happened at the intersection of Route 143 and Route 159, near Old Alton Edwardsville Road at around 11:45 a.m. Hazmat crews from the Madison County Emergency Management Agency, Madison County Hazmat, Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery, and Marathon Pipeline have also responded to the scene.

Residents are being advised to avoid the area. The following road remained closed Friday afternoon:

• Wanda Road from New Poag to Wagon Wheel
• Old Alton Edwardsville Road from Illinois State Route 143 to west of the Cahokia Canal
