What we know about Marathon Pipe Line, the company whose pipeline leaked in Edwardsville

Marathon Pipe Line LLC operates the pipeline that spilled approximately 163,800 gallons of oil in Edwardsville Friday. What do we know about Marathon, and where does it operate pipelines?

Marathon Pipe Line is a subsidiary of MPLX LP, according to its website. MPLX is a master limited partnership formed by Marathon Petroleum Corp. Marathon Pipe Line is based in Findlay, Ohio. The company’s roots go back to 1887, when the Ohio Oil Co. was founded. Its first pipeline was constructed in 1906 and stretched from Martinsville, Illinois, to Preble, Indiana. In 1960, Marathon was created as a subsidary.

Marathon operates pipelines in several states, including Illinois and Missouri. The company has a Pipeline Finder App that allows users to report concerns, review steps for safe digging and learn more about pipeline locations.

The company operates thousands of miles of pipelines throughout the U.S., and one of its pipelines, called Cushing - Roxana Ozark 22” Crude, stretches more than 430 miles from Oklahoma to Illinois.

Marathon’s incident and mileage report is available online through the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s safety program.
