MetroLink service between the Emerson Park and Fairview Heights stations has resumed following a Sunday afternoon collision between a train and car.

The commuter service is temporarily operating on a single track between the two stations, so passengers may see minor delays, MetroLink said in a statement.

Nine people were injured when a car and a MetroLink train collided shortly after 4 p.m. near the Washington Park station.

All nine were taken to area hospitals, said Assistant Chief Ronnie Harris of the Washington Park Fire Department. Two of the injured - the driver of the car and someone on the train - were in critical condition.

The car burst into flames after the collision, authorities said.

Here’s the full Sunday night update from MetroLink regarding restored train service: “MetroLink has resumed operation on a single track between the Emerson Park and Fairview Heights Stations. MetroLink Station Shuttles are cancelled. MetroLink passengers may experience minor delays during single-track operations. “
