Police ID man who died after pick-up truck crashes near park in Madison County

A 45-year-old Alton man died after a pick-up truck crashed near the entrance of Gordon Moore Park early Saturday morning.

Thomas J. Hughes was traveling west on Illinois 140 when the pick-up truck he was driving veered off the right side of the roadway and hit a traffic light fixture head-on at around 1:53 a.m., according to a news release from the Alton Police Department.

Hughes was transported to an Alton hospital, where he later died from his injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Alton police officers and firefighters responded to the scene.

The traffic crash continues to be investigated by the Alton Police Department and the Madison County Coroner’s Office.
