The Belleville Fire Department received a call at 5:01 p.m. Friday reporting a fire at a residence at 401 E. B St. in Belleville.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the single unit, and the fire was out by 5:29 p.m., according to Fire Chief J.P. Penet.

No injuries were reported.

Firefighters arrived on the scene one minute and 45 seconds after receiving the call, the chief said.

Substantial smoke could be seen from the street, and flames on the roof were briefly visible from the back of the building.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the single unit of the multi-unit residence.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the fire was started by a roofing company trying to put a seam on the roof, Penet said Saturday.

The unit’s resident, Matt Weiss, was on the scene and said no one was at home when the fire was reported. The family’s dogs were safely taken from the building.

Tyler Ziemba, who lives at 405 E. B St. on the other end of the building, was also away from home when he received the call that the building was on fire.

Ziemba was able to retrieve his pets from his home and could be seen tending to his cats at the scene.

Penet said it was “pretty fortunate” they were able to put the fire out so quickly, particularly with the heavy wind.

On Saturday, Penet said the building was ready for repairs and that tenets would be let back in after the building was inspected for occupancy.
