The identity of a Granite City area man who died in a fire at his home on Franko Lane was released Monday by the Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn.

Tony M. Peterson, 55, of Chouteau Township, was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:19 a.m. Friday by Investigator Kyle Burgess of the coroner’s office, according to a press release.

Preliminary results of an autopsy show Peterson died of smoke inhalation, the release states. Final results will be released once routine testing is finished.

Funeral arrangements for Peterson are pending.

The fire in the 1200 block of Franko Lane was reported at 1:13 a.m.

Firefighters from Mitchell Fire Department found heavy smoke and flames coming from the home when they arrived.

“Peterson’s body was found within the residence and located after the fire was extinguished,” the release states.

Madison County Sheriff’s Department, Mitchell Fire Department and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office are investigating the cause of the fire.
