President Biden has nominated State Sen. Rachelle Aud Crowe, D-Glen Carbon, to become U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Illinois.

Biden also nominated David C. Davis of the Illinois State Police to serve as the next U.S. marshal for the district.

The nominations are subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate. No timetable has been announced for the confirmation process to begin.

U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, Illinois Democrats, said in a statement that the nominees were among the people recommended for consideration by a nonpartisan screening committee formed by the senators. Duckworth and Durbin will guide the nominations through the Senate.

“We are pleased that President Biden has nominated Rachelle Crowe and David Davis,” the statement said. “They have the qualifications, integrity, and judgment to serve with distinction as a U.S. Attorney and U.S. Marshal in the Southern District of Illinois.”

Crowe, if she is confirmed, would replace U.S. Attorney Steven D. Weinhoeft, who has served since July 2018.

“I’m honored to be nominated for the position of U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Illinois , and I’m looking forward to the nomination process,” Crowe said.

Crow has represented District 56 in the Illinois Senate since 2019. From 2006-2018, Crowe worked as an assistant state’s attorney in Madison County in the Violent Crimes, General Felony and Juvenile Abuse units according to bio information released by The White House. She was in private practice from 2000-2006.

Crowe graduated with a JD degree from St. Louis University Law School in 2000.

Winhoeft said he has known about the nomination for some time.

“We look forward to ensuring a smooth transition to ensure that the great work done by the U.S. Attorney’s Office continues without interruption,” Weinhoeft said.

Davis also could not be reached. If confirmed, he would replace U.S. Marshal Bradley A. Maxwell, who resigned Dec. 31 after serving since May 2018.

The bio information from the Biden Administration states Davis has served as a task force officer for the state police since 2017. He worked for the U.S. Marshal’s Service from 1994 to 2016.

He has a masters degree from Webster University in St. Louis.

Former U.S. Marshal Don Slaznik knows Davis well. Davis used to work for Slaznik.

“He was one of the best deputies I had and not only for the Fugitive Task Force, he knows how to do and handle every operation. He is qualified to do anything. He is a wonderful man. I recommend him very highly,” Slaznik said.
